According to CarAndDriver.com, the automaker pay a minimum of $30 million to reimburse owners, due to transmission issues with their cars.

In a March, 2020 article, CarAndDriver.com stated: “A federal judge approved the settlement Ford offered in late January wherein the automaker will repurchase thousands of defective Fiesta and Focus vehicles for up to $22,000 each, according to the Detroit Free Press.” CarAndDriver.com further wrote: “Ford has proposed an updated settlement of a minimum of $30 million in cash reimbursement in a class-action lawsuit over problems with dual-clutch automatic transmissions in Focus and Fiesta vehicles. The settlement could affect as many as two million owners of 2011 to 2016 Fiesta or 2012 to 2016 Focus cars.” Additionally: “The transmissions, internally referred to as DPS6, are dual-clutch six-speed automatics which use dry clutches and are prone to rough shifting, requiring frequent repairs. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) hasn’t found evidence the transmission poses a safety risk.”

While Ford has worked to rectify the problems with the transmissions that are in some of its cars, many drivers were left angry due to ill-performing Ford Vehicles. Let’s take a look at some of the Ford transmission problems and find out what Ford has done about the issues.

What Ford models have transmission problems?

Ford’s Focus, Fusion and Fiesta, models have been plagued with transmission problems in recent years. This began after owners were buying or leasing the popular cars. During the time that the federal fuel emissions regulations passed and gas prices rose, Ford found itself working against their competitors to create a durable yet fuel-efficient car. The objective was to manufacture a light-weight vehicle that would save a Ford owner money on gas as well as maintenance.  How did Ford accomplish this? One way was by taking a manual/standard transmission and making it so that it could shift automatically. Due to that move, the transmissions in Ford’s new lines of ultra-efficient and money-saving cars were sold to millions of consumers.

What year focus has transmission problems?

The affected vehicles with the faulty transmissions were the Fiesta models between the years of 2011 to 2016, and 2012 to 2016 Ford Focus models. The “PowerShift” transmission which is  six-speed dual-clutch automatic- had soon garnered complaints from drivers. The main issue was the fac that the car’s gearbox would shudder, stumble shift roughly.

Is there a recall on Ford Focus transmission?

Ford Motor Company has recalled specific model year 2013-2017 Ford Focus hatchback cars. The dates of manufacturing are between February 14, 2012 and August 26, 2016. These cars are equipped with a manual transmission. Ford vowed to notify owners as well as dealers. They will also work to reprogram the cars with the “Body Control Module” which will include a software update- that will cost the Focus owner nothing.

What is Ford doing about the focus transmission?
As mentioned earlier, Ford offered a “…settlement of a minimum of $30 million in cash reimbursement in a class-action lawsuit over problems with dual-clutch automatic transmissions in Focus and Fiesta vehicles. The settlement could affect as many as two million owners of 2011 to 2016 Fiesta or 2012 to 2016 Focus cars,” as reported by CarAndDriver.com.

Ford Knew of the PowerShift Transmission issues

Additionally, CarAndDriver.com also reported: “A Detroit Free Press investigative report last July cited internal documents showing that Ford knew the PowerShift transmission was rough but went through with production plans. Customers complain that the transmission shudders and vibrates when accelerating from a stop and that repeated repairs including clutch or entire transmission replacements don't permanently fix the problem. In August, Ford extended warranties for the affected owners to seven years or 100,000 miles and issued a statement saying, ‘While these vehicles always were and remain safe to drive, we regret the inconvenience our customers have experienced.’”

What is the latest recall for Ford?

Not only has Ford worked to remedy its transmission issues, the automaker Ford recalled nearly a quarter of a million vehicles because of a suspension issue.  If left unattended, the suspension part could break or fracture and then consequently increase the risk of a crash.  In a July, 2020 article published by Newsweek.com, the post states: The recall applies to the Ford Flex, Taurus police car, Taurus SHO and Lincoln MKT vehicles from 2013 through 2018 model years. Most of the recalled cars and SUVs are in North America. If the suspension moves a lot, the rear toe links can fracture. Toe links keep the rear suspension stable and the tires on the pavement.”

One Ford Owner Voices Frustration Over Ford Transmission Problems

One Ford owner discussed his anger over the recent transmission problems he experienced: “I own a 2014 Ford Focus, and I have had significant problems ever since I bought it. Ryan Karczewski of Royal Oak, Michigan appears on social media angered by the issues his car has brought him. “I’ve had two clutch replacements and I probably need a third, but I just don’t have the time to drop it off at the dealership…” Karczewski also talked about his car sputtering in traffic and he does not travel to the places he desires to drive.

Ford Fiesta Owner Discusses Transmission Issues

Another Ford owner talked about the issues she has with her Focus model: “I bought my car brand new in 2011, November. I’m the only owner and I was all excited cause it was my first brand new car.” Michelle Hughes of Flint, Michigan was excited to have her Ford Fiesta as she bought the car with money she received after her mother passed. Hughes then discusses her Ford transmission problems: “I had it a couple years- and there was a recall. They fixed it and it was fine.” Hughes then adds: “And then two or three years ago, it started acting funny. And this transmission light came on the dashboard.” She added that she would stop at a red light. When it would change green, the car wouldn’t go. “Then all of a sudden [the car] it would shoot across the road, just like a rocket. “Now it overheats,” Hughes added. “You go to park and you will put in park – and it will jump forward.” Hughes added that she will not put her children in the car and she does not want them hurt. She does not qualify for a car buy-back from Ford and she feels as if Ford has left her out to dry. “ I trusted Ford- and I shouldn’t have,” states Hughes.

Ford Transmission Problems- Recall Issued On 2020 Ford F-150 and 2020 Ford Ranger

Not only have Ford Focus, Fiesta and other models plagued the automaker. In recent years, Ford issued a recall on some truck models. According to an April 2020 post on the torquenews.com website: “Ford issued a safety recall on select 2020 vehicles. The recall involves Ford’s controversial 10-speed automatic transmission which has had many complaints and is also involved in a class-action lawsuit that was filed this year and remains unresolved. According to Ford, this recall includes 2020 Ford Ranger and 2020 F-150 vehicles with 10-speed automatic transmission and 2020 Expedition vehicles with the police package and 10-speed automatic transmission. Units equipped with a rotary gearshift dial are not affected.”

The post outlines the importance of Ford owners to get the issue with their transmissions fixed quickly: “In affected vehicles, a clip that locks the gearshift cable to the transmission may not be fully seated. Over time, a partially seated clip may allow the transmission to be in a gear state different from the gearshift position selected by the driver. This could allow the driver to move the shifter to Park and remove the ignition key, without the transmission gear actually being in Park. If the parking brake is not applied in those cases, the vehicle could move unintentionally, increasing the risk of injury or crash,” adds torquenews.com
