You are in your car racing towards a meeting for which you are late. As you tear down a quiet residential block you suddenly hear a clunk. Your eyes move to look out of your passenger-side mirror and you realize that it is gone. It was knocked out when you got too close to a parked car.
You continue on your trip to work, but you wonder if you should drive home with the missing mirror or if you should have it towed to a mechanic who can install a new one. There are some states in which it is illegal to drive without a rearview mirror and others where the absence of one is merely frowned upon.
Generally speaking, it is usually not illegal to drive without the center rearview mirror so long as the side mirrors are intact. Most states just want to ensure that you have a means of seeing behind you when you are on the road.
Why You Should Always Use a Rearview Mirror
Whether it is legal or illegal, it is always a good idea to have a rearview mirror in your car. It helps you to see how far away the car behind you is driving. It is instrumental when you are changing lanes.
It is very important to have the passenger side-view mirror. Side-view mirrors offer a perspective that you will not be able to see from a regular rearview mirror. If you enter or exit the expressway without some kind of rearview mirror, you may cause an accident.
Even though it may not be illegal to drive without a rearview mirror in your state, the police can still pull you over for driving an unsafe vehicle. A new mirror can cost anywhere from $75 to $1,000 depending on the make and model of the car.
If you have a luxury car but you also have no money because of paying for the luxury car, you can always get a cheap rearview mirror to use temporarily until you can afford the mirror that would look best in your car.
How does a rearview mirror become damaged?
Rearview mirrors tend to be glued on to your car very securely. However, if you are in an accident, they can fall off or crack. The vast majority of vehicles nowadays have windows that are designed to protect a driver and their car interiors from the elements. Although this may increase the longevity of your carpet and mirrors, they will still suffer damage from heat over time. You may end up not being able to see out of your rearview if it has been damaged by the sun.
