2020 RAM 1500 Overview

For a few years now, Chrysler has been using the tagline, “Guts. Glory. RAM.” for their RAM trucks. And for good reason! RAM trucks are considered some of the hardest-working and most durable pickup trucks on the road today.

The 2020 RAM 1500 is the next in a long lineup of RAM trucks, and it more than fits the bill when it comes to living up to Chrysler’s tagline. Most critics have considered it to be one of the best pickup trucks released for the 2020 model year. They’ve loved it because of features like:

  • The comfortable ride that it provides
  • The extra rear-seat legroom that it offers
  • The maximum tow rating that it achieves

The 2020 RAM 1500 is, simply put, another great addition to the RAM legacy. U.S. News & World Report summed it up like this: “Even the meticulous eye will have trouble uncovering any shortcomings here.”

But with all of that being said, it’s still worth noting that the 2020 RAM 1500 isn’t without its issues. Some critics have panned it for not having the off-roading skills that similar pickups have. And there have also been some 2020 RAM transmission problems that have been reported since the 2020 RAM 1500 first hit the road. You’ll want to take them into account while assessing your own 2020 RAM 1500 or considering one that you might want to buy.

2020 RAM 1500 Transmission

The 2020 RAM 1500 offers a wealth of engine options to those buying one. There are four different engines that you’ll find tucked under the hood of a 2020 RAM 1500.

Most of the different 2020 RAM 1500 trims come equipped with a 3.6-liter V6 engine that can produce 2015 horsepower. But there are also two V8 engines available for those who need a little more power. Both of them can produce 395 horsepower, but one of them also comes with an eTorque mild-hybrid system that is designed to save has. Additionally, there is a 3.0-liter diesel engine for those who would prefer going that route.

Regardless of which engine you want in a 2020 RAM 1500, though, there is only one transmission used in all of the trims. It’s an eight-speed automatic transmission that most critics have praised for shifting smoothly and shifting at the right time. It hasn’t caused too many 2020 RAM transmission problems just yet.

2020 RAM Transmission Problems

While the eight-speed transmission in the 2020 RAM 1500 hasn’t wreaked havoc on those who own the truck, there have been some 2020 RAM transmission problems that have been reported. You’re going to want to look out for these issues if you drive a 2020 RAM 1500 or if you’re wondering whether or not to buy one. Let’s talk about each of these 2020 RAM transmission problems below.

1. Bad Transmission Control Module

The transmission control module in a truck like the 2020 RAM 1500 is responsible for collecting data from the transmission in it and using it to regulate the way in which the truck shifts. If it goes bad, it could potentially cause 2020 RAM transmission problems and make it difficult to drive a 2020 RAM 1500.

That’s what one 2020 RAM 1500 owner with just over 500 miles on his truck complained about when they took to CarComplaints.com recently. They said that their 2020 RAM 1500 experienced a “data bus failure” on four separate occasions that caused them to lose power steering, brakes, and more. At first, their dealer thought this might be caused by a bad battery or bad ABS control modules. But when fixing those things didn’t work, the dealer suggested it might be the result of a bad transmission control module.

“Currently they are trying to identify a bad transmission control module as the problem,” this person wrote. “Total miles 530 and only had the vehicle for 50 days. Had to be towed twice to the shop and the other two times it happened within a mile of the dealer. It’s spent about 20 days in the shop already.”

How to Fix This 2020 RAM Transmission Problem

The transmission control module in a 2020 RAM 1500 is obviously a very important part of it. Without a working transmission control module, it can be challenging keeping control of a 2020 RAM 1500. It’s why this part must be replaced ASAP if it goes bad.

If you suffer this 2020 RAM transmission problem in a newer truck, you should be able to get the transmission control module replaced free of charge with your warranty. But if it happens down the line when your warranty expires, you could be paying over $900 to replace it. It’s one of the more expensive fixes for the transmission in the 2020 RAM 1500.

2. Inability to Shift Gears

Of all the 2020 RAM transmission problems listed here, the one we’re going to talk about next could be the most dangerous of the bunch. Another 2020 RAM 1500 owner took to CarComplaints.com to explain how their truck wouldn’t shift out of his first gear one day when they were driving it. This left them unable to drive their car normally and put them into a position where they easily could have been hit by another driver.

“While stopped at a light, when I began to accelerate making a left turn, the transmission wouldn’t shift out of first gear,” they wrote. “This is dangerous should you need to quickly move a car out of the way. Car went up to 5000 RPMs before I released the gas and proceeded to the side of the road.”

To make matters worse, this person also wasn’t able to figure out what was wrong with their 2020 RAM 1500’s transmission once they got it to a dealer. The dealer couldn’t duplicate the issue to figure out what the 2020 RAM transmission problem seemed to be.

How to Fix This 2020 RAM Transmission Problem

If a truck were to get stuck in first gear under normal circumstances, it would usually be because of the transmission fluid in it. When your transmission fluid is too old, it can cause transmission solenoids to get stuck, which can leave a truck in first gear.

This probably isn’t going to be an issue if you have a 2020 RAM 1500 with very few miles on it. But you might want to do a transmission flush to see if it clears up this problem if you’re having it. That will run you about $200. You might also want to think about replacing a solenoid that has gone bad for a few hundred dollars if you suspect that it could be causing complications.

3. Hard Shifting

Hard shifting is another one of the 2020 RAM transmission problems that you’ll want to watch out for when you’re behind the wheel of a 2020 RAM 1500. This is an issue that tends to plague a lot of the newer pickup trucks that are out on the road today.

If your 2020 RAM 1500 is shifting harder than you think it should, this could be caused by a bad transmission replacement sensor. You could also have old transmission fluid that is to blame for your hard shifting issue. This is something that you’re going to want to have your dealer investigate so that they can get to the bottom of it.

How to Fix This 2020 RAM Transmission Problem

Although hard shifting might not be something that you have to worry about as much as other 2020 RAM transmission problems, it is going to make driving a 2020 RAM 1500 unpredictable. You should talk to your dealer about it as soon as you can to see what you can do to get it to stop.

Fixing this problem might be as simple as doing a transmission flush. Or it might call for you to do transmission position sensor replacement, which is something that could cost you up to $300. Either way, you should be able to fix this problem without spending a small fortune on it.

More 2020 RAM Problems

For the most part, the 2020 RAM 1500 has been devoid of problems outside of the 2020 RAM transmission problems we just mentioned. But there are several other issues that people have complained about with regards to the 2020 RAM 1500 on CarComplaints.com. Here are a few of them:

  • Some people have complained about the eTorque system that we referred to earlier randomly causing their truck to turn off
  • They’ve also reported the power steering system being disengaged by an electrical issue
  • They’ve suggested that there is sometimes a serious delay in the throttle response of their truck
  • They’ve claimed their forward-collision warning system has inadvertently applied their brakes when it shouldn’t have

The problems that people have had with the 2020 RAM 1500 are few and far between. But the list of them has continued to grow ever since the 2020 RAM 1500 was first released.

2020 RAM 1500 Recalls

As of right now, there haven’t been any 2020 RAM 1500 recalls put out as a direct result of the 2020 RAM transmission problems that we’ve gone through. But there are seven recalls out for the 2020 RAM 1500 thus far. This should be at least a little bit of a cause for concern for anyone who owns one or wants to buy one.

Check out some of the things that the 2020 RAM 1500 has been recalled for here:

  • The rearview camera may continue to display a lingering rearview image even when a driver is no longer backing their truck up
  • The windshield wipers may stop working and make visibility an issue for drivers
  • The side airbag might not inflate like it’s supposed to
  • The all-weather floor mats might get in the way of a driver’s ability to push down on the gas and brake pedals
  • The driver’s side mirror glass might go missing and reduce visibility

If you find yourself dealing with any of these issues or if you suspect that your 2020 RAM 1500 might be a part of a recall, you should get your truck down to your dealer right away.

The 2020 RAM transmission problems that have been reported as of today aren’t that bad in the grand scheme of things. You should be able to make each of them go away by making a simple fix to your transmission. Your warranty should cover it.
