To junk your car, gather the vehicle and ownership details, request offers from buyers who handle its condition, confirm any collection charges, and complete the required transfer paperwork. Do not assume that a car is worthless because it no longer drives—or that every buyer will value it the same way.

Should you junk the car or sell it as a used vehicle?

Before choosing a recycling route, consider whether the car could reasonably be repaired or sold as a complete used vehicle. A vehicle with an isolated mechanical problem may attract a different type of buyer from a severely damaged or incomplete car. Describe the problem and compare the options instead of relying only on the label “junk car.”

Do not assume a junk car can be sold without proof of ownership. Requirements depend on the state and the vehicle’s circumstances.
