How to Sell Your Car: Compare Offers and Prepare for Pickup

By Cash Cars Buyer, Inc. · Published

To sell your car, start with accurate vehicle details, compare offers on the same terms, confirm the ownership paperwork, and agree on payment and pickup before handing it over. The best option depends on the car’s condition and how much time you want to spend on the sale.

Choose a selling option that fits your car

A running car with a clear ownership history may suit a private sale or dealer offer. A damaged vehicle, a car with expensive mechanical problems, or one that no longer starts may also interest a specialist buyer or recycler. Compare the amount you would actually receive after transport, preparation, and other agreed costs.

A private sale gives you control over the listing and negotiation, but also means handling messages, viewings, and buyer follow-up. A direct buyer can offer a simpler process, although convenience alone does not tell you whether an offer is competitive. If you are unsure whether your vehicle is better sold as a used car or for recycling, read our guide to junking a car.

Prepare the details buyers need

Take clear photos of all four sides, the interior, and any significant damage. Describe the current condition rather than how the car ran before it broke down. Accurate information helps a buyer explain the basis for an offer and reduces surprises when the vehicle is inspected.

Compare the final amount, not just the headline offer

Ask each buyer whether the price includes collection, whether any fees will be deducted, and what could change the offer after inspection. Get those details in writing. A higher initial number can be less useful than a lower confirmed offer if transport or other deductions have not been explained.

For example, an illustrative $900 offer with a $150 collection charge leaves $750. An $800 offer including collection leaves $800. These are comparison examples, not quotes or estimates for your car. Your vehicle needs its own review.

Confirm paperwork and payment

Check your state’s requirements for transferring ownership, reporting the sale, handling plates, and dealing with a lien. Use the USAGov directory of state motor vehicle agencies to find the relevant office. A buyer’s willingness to collect a car does not replace the required ownership process.

Agree on the payment method before pickup. Be suspicious of someone who sends a check for more than the price and asks you to return the difference or pay a transporter. The FTC explains that available check funds do not prove a check is genuine. Verify payment with your bank when appropriate.

Prepare for collection

Remove personal belongings and clear personal information from connected devices, paired phones, and navigation settings. Have the agreed documents ready. Review the final amount and paperwork before completing the handover, and keep copies of the sale records. Follow your state’s instructions for plates and any seller notification.

Common questions about selling a car

Can I sell a car that does not run?

Some buyers consider non-running cars. Explain the fault, whether it rolls, and where it is parked so the buyer can assess the vehicle and collection needs.

Does an appraisal request commit me to selling?

Our appraisal form is a request for a review, not a commitment to sell. It does not produce an instant or guaranteed price.

What if I still owe money on the car?

Contact your lender about the payoff and lien-release process before agreeing to a sale. The steps depend on your lender and state.
